Brian Eno Songs: Strange Overtones, Baby’s on Fire, $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Songs Written by Brian Eno, “Heroes”, Strange Overtones, Hallo Spaceboy, I’m Afraid of Americans, the Hearts Filthy Lesson, Boys Keep Swinging, Baby’s on Fire, Warszawa, Strangers When We Meet, Neuköln, I’m Deranged, Get Real. Excerpt: “Baby’s on Fire” “Baby’s on Fire ” is the third track on English musician Brian Eno ’s 1973 debut album, Here Come the Warm Jets . It is an example of the predominantly glam /art rock style Eno employed at the time, praised for its guitar solo by King Crimson member Robert Fripp .Writing and recording Eno recorded “Baby’s on Fire” during the Here Come the Warm Jets sessions in September 1973 at Majestic Studios, London , where he had previously recorded the majority of his earlier material. The track was produced by Eno, who handled production and mixing duties on the bulk of the album’s recording, and was created with musicians Simon King, Marty Simon, Robert Fripp , Paul Rudolph , and John Wetton . The song is a bizarre fantasy about a photography session involving a burning infant and unthinking, laughing onlookers. Live recordings of the song have appeared on various Eno recordings, the first being June 1, 1974 , performed with Kevin Ayers , John Cale , Ollie Halsall and Eddie Sparrow. Eno spoke positively about this performance, saying, “The instruments were incredibly out of tune, so out of tune you wouldn t believe it. But it sounds fantastic. There s one little bit in it where there s a riff between the guitar and one of the bassists, and they re so out of tune it sounds like cellos. Amazing! I mean if you tried to make that sound in the studio it would have taken you ages. You wouldn t have thought of making it, in fact, it s such a bizarre sound. And the piano and guitar are quite well out of tune as well. Ha!” Musical |

Nashville Star Winners $8.96 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Buddy Jewell Jr. (born April 2, 1961 in Lepanto, Arkansas) is an American country music artist who was the first winner on the USA Network talent show Nashville Star. Signed to Columbia Records in 2003, Jewell made his debut on the American country music scene with the release of his self-titled album, which produced back-to-back Top 5 singles in “Help Pour out the Rain (Lacey’s Song)” and “Sweet Southern Comfort”. Another album, Times Like These, followed in 2005. Buddy Jewell was born in Lepanto, Arkansas on April 2, 1961. He began playing guitar after buying one from a schoolmate during childhood, and saved the money that he earned bagging groceries to buy guitar lesson books. Jewell also listened to the music that his father, also named Buddy, played for him, and was taught by his uncle Clyde how to play “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. By age fifteen, Jewell had also taught himself how to play Johnny Cash’s “I Still Miss Someone.” Jewell also majored in television and radio in college, although he left in his junior year to marry, despite the marriage only lasting two-and-a-half years. Jewell later moved to Camden, Arkansas at age 21 in pursuit of a musical career. There, he discovered a band called White Oak, which was seeking a new lead singer. This band was sponsored by a booking agency whose roster also included Canyon and a band founded by a then-unknown Trace Adkins. After touring with White Oak for four years, he moved to Dallas, Texas, where he took a role in a gunfighing show at Six Flags over Texas. He later entered a singing competition that was sponsored by the band Alabama, whose music was also an inspiration to him. He won the competition’s top prize, which was an opening slot for the band. After winning the competition, h… More: |

Excerpt: Sonic Youth is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Steve Shelley (drums), and Mark Ibold (bass). In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City. Part of the first wave of American noise rock groups, the band carried out their interpretation of the hardcore punk ethos throughout the evolving American underground that focused more on the DIY ethic of the genre rather than its specific sound. As a result, some consider Sonic Youth as pivotal in the rise of the alternative rock movement. The band has experienced success and critical acclaim throughout the last three decades, continuing into the new millennium, including signing to major label DGC in 1990, and headlining the 1995 Lollapalooza festival. Sonic Youth have expressed a wide variety of influences, ranging from the influential protopunk musician Patti Smith to composer John Cage. The band has been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar could do”, using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings, and preparing guitars with objects like drumsticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre. Sonic Youth’s history began when guitarist Thurston Moore moved to New York City in early 1976. Interested in … More: |

People From Nevada City, California $9.71 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: January 18, 1982 ) in Nevada City, California Joanna Newsom (born January 18, 1982) is an American harpist, pianist, and singer-songwriter from Nevada City, California. Newsom grew up in the small town of Nevada City, California. She was exposed to music from a young age. Her father plays guitar, and her mother is a classically trained pianist who also plays hammered dulcimer, autoharp, and conga drums. She attended a Waldorf school, where she studied theater and learned to memorize and recite long poems, a skill that she has said helps her to remember lyrics to her long songs while on tour. Newsom had known since age two or three that she wanted to play the harp. Her parents eventually agreed to sign her up for harp lessons, but the local harp teacher did not want to take on such a young student and suggested that she learn to play the piano first. After four years of piano lessons (starting when she was four), she began playing the harp, which she “loved from the first lesson onward.” Her harp teacher taught her about composition and improvisation. Newsom learned to play on progressively larger Celtic harps, until her parents bought her a full-size pedal harp in the seventh grade. Newsom studied composition and creative writing at Mills College, Oakland, California. While at Mills, she played keyboards in The Pleased. In 2002 and 2003, respectively, Newsom recorded two EPs, Walnut Whales and Yarn and Glue. These homemade recordings were intended to serve as a document of her songs, which she had previously been recording on a Fisher-Price tape recorder. These EPs were not originally intended for public distribution, but at the suggestion of Noah Georgeson (who had helped her record the songs, and who was her boyfriend at the time), she burn… More: |
