Chapters: Sebastian Schneider, Atahualpa Yupanqui, Jorge Cafrune, Walter Giardino, Eduardo Falú, Mauricio “Moris” Birabent, Dante Spinetta, Manuel Alcón, Alex Fox. Excerpt: Sebastian Schneider is a German Argentine guitar player, multi-instrumentalist, singer, composer and musical producer born on July 28, 1982. He is an artist which begins to rise to prominence on the new Argentine and Latin American rock scene. He has been part of several rock bands and began his solo career on 2004. His songs have a deep lyrical content as well as his particular guitar playing technique, being one of the few Argentine (and world) artists performing fingerstyle guitar playing with electric guitars on rock music and executing complex scales and musical patterns at the same time he sings. Sebastian Schneider (who took his mother’s maiden name) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from a German descendant mother and a Basque descendant father. He lived his early years on Palermo neighbourhood, where he also started his musical career. At the age of six, his grandmother Florencia gave him his first guitar, an acoustic nylon guitar. He began his musical studies on Carlos Guastavino Conservatory, where he studied classical music, tango and Argentine folklore. At eleven, despite his parents persistence, he decided to give up all his music activities. During that period he already had been part of numerous concerts as a guitar player on Conservatory events as well as private ones. One of Schneider’s reasons about ceasing his first music activities will ironically mark the future of his career later: “I wanted to learn to play the electric guitar, and they (my parents) wouldn’t let me, they told me to learn to play this one well first (the acoustic nylon guitar). As it was… More:

Excerpt: Saul Hudson (born 23 July 1965), better known by his stage name Slash, is a British-American musician. Best-known as the former lead guitarist of the hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, with whom he performed and recorded between 1985 and 1996, he later formed the eponymous Slash’s Snakepit and co-founded Velvet Revolver with his former bandmates Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum. His debut solo album, Slash, was released in April 2010. Slash has received critical recognition as a guitarist. In August 2009, Time Magazine ranked him #2 on its list of the “10 Best Electric Guitar Players of All-Time”. He was also ranked #21 on Gigwise’s list of the “50 Greatest Guitarists Ever”. Slash was born and raised in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. His African-American mother, Ola Hudson, was born in Tennessee, and worked as a costume designer for David Bowie, among many other actors and musicians. His English father, Anthony Hudson, was an artist who created album covers for musicians such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell. When Slash was eleven, his parents relocated the family to Los Angeles, California. His parents separated and he lived primarily with his mother. He was given the nickname “Slash” by family friend Seymour Cassel because he was “always in a hurry, zipping around from one thing to another”. As a young boy, Slash was influenced by a musical school teacher: After deciding to form a band with friend Steven Adler, Slash decided to pick up the bass guitar as Adler had declared himself lead guitarist. Slash stopped in at Fairfax Music School and told the receptionist he wanted to play the bass, and at that time met his teacher Robert Wolin. Wolin told him that in order to learn he would need a bass of his own. Slash went home and asked his grand… More:

$9.05

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery (6 March 1923 – 15 June 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. He is generally considered one of the major jazz guitarists, emerging after such seminal figures as Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian and influencing countless others, including Pat Martino, George Benson, Emily Remler, Kenny Burrell and Pat Metheny. Montgomery was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He came from a musical family; his brothers, Monk (string bass and electric bass) and Buddy (vibraphone and piano), were jazz performers. The brothers released a number of albums together as the Montgomery Brothers. Although he was not skilled at reading music, he could learn complex melodies and riffs by ear. Montgomery started learning guitar relatively late, at the age of 19, by listening to and learning the recordings of his idol, guitarist Charlie Christian. He was known for his ability to play Christian solos note for note and was hired by Lionel Hampton for this ability. Many fellow jazz guitarists consider Montgomery the greatest influence among modern jazz guitarists. Pat Metheny has praised him greatly, saying “I learned to play listening to Wes Montgomery’s Smokin’ At The Half Note.” In addition, Metheny stated to the New York Times in 2005 that the solo on “If You Could See Me Now,” from this album is his favorite of all time. Joe Pass said, “To me, there have been only three real innovators on the guitar—Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, and Django Reinhardt,” as cited in James Sallis’s The Guitar Players and in his Hot Licks instructional video. In addition, George Benson attests, “Wes had a corn on his thumb, which gave his sound that point. He would get one sound for the soft parts, and then that point by using the corn. Excerpt: Jonathan Q. “Jon” Arbuckle is a character from the Garfield comic strip by Jim Davis. He has also appeared in the animated television series Garfield and Friends, the computer-animated The Garfield Show, and two live-action feature films. A nerdy and clumsy man, Jon is the owner of Garfield and Odie. He converses with Garfield and is often the butt of his jokes. In the animated Garfield and Friends, he was frequently portrayed as being incredibly gullible when faced with unscrupulous salesmen and rather dumb in general. On The Garfield Show, however, he’s portrayed as more of a smarter person, but still is a little gullible. Jon’s birthday is July 28, 1950 (the same month and day as that of Jim Davis). Jon tells Garfield that he is 29 years old in a December 23, 1980 strip (he makes a joke that he would be 30, but he was sick a year). In the animated show Garfield and Friends, we learn that Jon has an Italian ancestor whose name was Tony Arbuccli. Some episodes of the show suggested that Jon and his pets live in Muncie, Indiana, which is also where Jim Davis lives. Jon wears contact lenses, and his favorite music style is polka (a preference that he shares neither with Garfield nor with any other character). He can play accordion, guitar and bongos, though his musical skills are far from good. Some of his “fun” ways to cure boredom are buying new socks, clipping his toenails, or playing “Guess the Burp” with Garfield. Jon was raised on a farm and occasionally visits his mother, father, and brother, Doc Boy. Jon acquired Odie when Lyman, an old friend of his (and Odie’s original owner) moved in with him and Garfield. After a few years, Lyman disappeared from the strip, never to be heard from again. Excerpt: Pierre Moerlen, born in Colmar (Haut-Rhin) on October 23 1952 and deceased in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines (near Strasbourg) on May 3, 2005 was a French drummer and percussionist, best known for his work with Gong and Mike Oldfield. Pierre Moerlen was born in Colmar (Haut-Rhin) on 23 October 1952, third of five children. His father Maurice Moerlen was a famous organist (one of his teachers was Maurice Duruflé) and his mother was a music teacher. All five Moerlen children learned music with their parents and all became musicians. Pierre’s younger brother, Benoît Moerlen, is also a percussionist (he worked also with Gong and Oldfield). Pierre left Colmar for Strasbourg to learn percussions with Jean Batigne, founder of Les Percussions de Strasbourg. He was also member of two rock and rock-jazz bands, including Asthme Congelateur (with included future Magma guitarist Gabriel Fédérow), whose most notable performance was the opening slot at the Seloncourt Festival in September 1972, headlined by Ange, Genesis and Robert Wyatt’s Matching Mole. In January 1973, Pierre joined Daevid Allen’s Gong, debuting on the Angel’s Egg album. In June 1973 he was asked by Virgin’s boss Richard Branson to play percussion with Mike Oldfield for the premiere of Tubular Bells, to replace the incapacitated Robert Wyatt. Steve Hillage, guitar player of Gong, also took part. Between 1975 and 1987, beginning with Ommadawn, Pierre would be Oldfield’s percussionist of choice for his albums and his tours. Pierre left and returned to Gong several times to tour with the Percussions de Strasbourg (he created with them Musik im Bauch by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Hiérophonie V by Yoshihisa Taïra at Festival international d’art contemporain de Royan, 1975), and
