It can always be helpful to have the help of an instructor when you are learning how to play acoustic guitar. However, this expense can add up very quickly when you are going to weekly lessons. For this reason, many people have begun learning online rather than with an instructor. If you are unable to afford an instructor at this time, you may find it useful to get a few tips.

Practicing is the key to becoming an expert guitar player, and you should make time to practice each day. The more you practice, the faster you are going to learn. On the other hand, do not overdo it. Be sure to take regular breaks. You will be comprehending a lot of new things at first, and your brain is going to need a rest. Your fingers and hands will too! When you are practicing, take your time with it. You will gain more from a short and focused practice session than you would from a long and sloppy one.

If you can become aware of the basic components of the guitar it will help you greatly. Think about the way the guitar is set up and how the different parts work simultaneously to make the sounds that you hear.

Getting your guitar in tune is going to be something that you will have to know how to do. You can get guides on the internet that will teach you how to do this step by step. If you get a digital guitar tuner from your local music store, you will have a much easier time getting this accomplished. Once you have been using the tuner for awhile you will get to the point where you can do it by ear and you won’t need the tuner anymore. You can always use the tuner to make sure you have done it accurately.

Some people develop bad habits with the way that they hold their guitar. These are habits that you will want to get rid of right away. If you can use the proper posture while playing your guitar, you will be able to create a much better sound. When you are learning how to play acoustic guitar you will definitely need to practice scales, but you should also make time to learn the various chords. Once you have the basic chords down you can move on to learning all of the different variations of them. This type of regular practice is going to get you familiarized with all of the frets on the guitar. Plus, practicing is going to improve your finger strength and dexterity.

Remaining positive and having a good attitude is very important. Sometimes when things get difficult it is easy to just throw in the towel and give up. Just remember why you started learning this in the first place, and let that keep you going. Having patience and staying positive are the two most important things when you are learning how to play acoustic guitar.

Biography Early life Ben Kweller was born in San Francisco, CA in 1981. In 1982, his family relocated to Emory, Texas , where his father, Howard Kweller, became the town’s first doctor. In 1986, the Kwellers moved to a much larger city, Greenville, TX . Kweller was exposed to music at a very early age. Howard taught Ben how to play the drums when he was seven years old. For the next year, the father and son pair would play together almost every night after Howard got home from work. With Howard singing and playing guitar and Ben keeping the beat, the duo would play songs by The Beatles , The Hollies , Jimi Hendrix , and other artists of the 1960s. Howard is also a longtime friend of Nils Lofgren , a neighbor with whom he went to high school. Kweller has mentioned in interviews that meeting Lofgren greatly helped his exposure to music. When Kweller turned eight, someone showed him how to play “Heart and Soul” on the piano and the youngster immediately began to create his own songs using the same chords. He still uses the same technique to write his songs today. By the time he was nine he had a dozen original compositions under his belt and entered a songwriting contest sponsored by Billboard magazine magazine . Kweller won an honorable mention. Adult Years Kweller married his girlfriend Liz (the subject of the song “Lizzy”) and they have two sons, named Dorian Zev Kweller, born in May 2006, and Judah Evan Kweller, born

Excerpt: ) Emma Anzai is the bassist and only female member of Australian rock band Sick Puppies. She was around 16 when she developed a strong passion for rock music. At the time, she was living in Japan; she was the only foreign child in her school and had a very difficult time making friends and adapting to a new culture and lifestyle. She discovered Silverchair and Green Day first and while listening to Frogstomp and Dookie, she gained a new obsession. Along with Silverchair and Green Day, she began listening to Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Her cousin was a few years older than she was and he owned a guitar. With her new passion for rock, she pressed him to teach her how to read tablature and how to play basic guitar. Once she learned the basics, she asked her parents for a guitar to call her own, but funds were tight so she continued to memorize her growing CD collection and pretend to play guitar on the TV remote. Her wish came true when her uncle surprised her for her birthday with a guitar combo set. She received a guitar, small combo amp, tuner and an instructional video. She dedicated every spare minute of the next twelve months becoming familiar with her new found love. She was highly impatient and couldn’t wait to be able to play her favorite songs that she had memorized. She initially found it very difficult to get her fingers to press where she wanted them to, but eventually she learned from her mistakes. Shortly after she began to master the guitar, she moved back to Australia and back to her old school and neighborhood where she was able to re-join her friends and familiar culture. Excerpt: Barbecue Bob Robert Hicks , better known as Barbecue Bob (September 11, 1902 October 21, 1931) was an early American country blues musician . His nickname came from the fact that he was a cook in a barbecue restaurant . One of the two extant photographs of Bob show him playing his guitar while wearing a full length white apron and cook’s hat. Early life He was born in Walnut Grove , Georgia . He and his brother, Charlie Hicks , together with Curley Weaver , were taught how to play the guitar by Curley’s mother, Savannah “Dip” Weaver. Bob began playing the 6-string guitar but picked up the 12-string guitar after moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1923-1924. He became one of the prominent performers of the newly developing early Atlanta blues style. In Atlanta, Hicks worked a variety of jobs, playing music on the side. While working at Tidwells’ Barbecue in a north Atlanta suburb, Hicks came to the attention of Columbia Records talent scout Dan Hornsby. Hornsby recorded him and decided to use Hicks’s job as a gimmick, having him pose in chef’s whites and hat for publicity photos and dubbing him “Barbecue Bob”. Career During his short career he recorded 68 78-rpm sides. He recorded his first side, “Barbecue Blues”, in March 1927. The record quickly sold 15,000 copies and made him the best selling artist for Columbia up to that date. Despite this initial

Chapters: François Luambo Makiadi, Henri Bowane, Barbara Kanam, Edouard Masengo, Nico Kasanda, Jean Bosco Mwenda, Diblo Dibala, Geo Bilongo. Excerpt: François Luambo Makiadi (6 July 1938 – 12 October 1989) was a major figure in twentieth century Congolese music, and African music in general. He is widely referred to as Franco Luambo or, simply, Franco. Known for his mastery of rumba, he was nicknamed the “Sorcerer of the Guitar” for his seemingly effortlessly fluid playing. As a founder of the seminal group OK Jazz, he is counted as one of the originators of the modern Congolese sound. François Luambo Makiadi was born in the rural village of Sona Bata in the western Bas Zaire region of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then the colony of Belgian Congo). When he was still a baby, his parents moved to the capital city of Leopoldville (now Kinshasa). His father, Joseph Emongo, was a railroad worker while his mother baked homemade bread to sell at a local market. At age seven he built a rudimentary guitar that he played to attract customers to his mother’s stall. His talent was recognized by guitarist Paul Ebengo Dewayon who taught François how to play. In 1950, the twelve year old made his professional debut as a member of Dewayon’s band, Watam, impressing audiences with his skills on a guitar almost as big as himself. Three years later, François recorded his first single Bolingo na ngai na Beatrice (My love for Beatrice) after he had become part of the house band for Loningisa Studio. The band leader, Henri Bowane, shortened his given name to “Franco”, a tag that would stay with him for the rest of his life. Under Bowane’s tutorage Franco became a lead guitarist skilled at the Congolese guitar display style called sebene, and also

Excerpt: Philip Kenneth Collen (born 8 December 1957 in Hackney, London, England) is the lead guitarist for English rock band Def Leppard. He joined the band in 1982 following the departure of Pete Willis. Collen was born in Hackney, London, England.. At the age of 16, Phil got his first guitar (a red Gibson SG), taught himself how to play, and left school to pursue a career in music. He then joined a line-up of early bands including Lucy, Tush, Dumb Blondes, and Girl. During his tenure at Girl, Collen’s career began rising, spurred by the relative success of the Girl albums Sheer Greed and Wasted Youth, which allowed Collen the opportunity to play at more significant venues. Before Collen’s entrance to Def Leppard, he had been previously asked to consider joining the band by Steve Clark and Joe Elliot, who he knew at the time. Despite this invitation, there was no need to replace Pete Willis, and as a result, Collen stayed as a member of Girl. However, when Willis left Def Leppard, there became a vacancy in the lineup, and Collen took this place after an audition performing Photograph during the recording sessions of Pyromania. Soon after, Collen officially joined the band, impressing both producer Mutt Lange and the rest of the band with his ability at playing the guitar. He and fellow guitarist Clark quickly bonded, becoming close friends and leading to the trademark dual-guitar sound of Def Leppard. He and Clark became known as the “Terror Twins,” in recognition of their talents. By this time, Collen had also become noted for his trademark bare-chested stage appearances. During the 1980s, Collen quit drinking alcohol, which he had developed a serious addiction to, stopped eating meat, and adopted a generally healthy lifestyle. According to Collen… More:

Excerpt: Big Bill Broonzy (26 June 1898 14 August 1958) was a prolific American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. His career began in the 1920s when he played country blues to mostly black audiences. Through the 30s and 40s he successfully navigated a transition in style to a more urban blues sound popular with white audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk-blues roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star. His long and varied career marks him as one of the key figures in the development of blues music in the 20th century. Broonzy copyrighted more than 300 songs during his lifetime, including both adaptations of traditional folk songs and original blues songs. As a blues composer, he was unique in that his compositions reflected the many vantage points of his rural-to-urban experiences. Born William Lee Conley Broonzy, “Big Bill” was one of Frank Broonzy and Mittie Belcher’s 17 children. His birth site and date are disputed as the Mississippi Blues Commission states that while he claimed birth in Bolivar County, Mississippi, Broonzy was actually born in Lake Dick, Arkansas. Broonzy claimed he was born in 1893 and many sources report that year, but after his death his twin sister produced a birth certificate giving it as 1898, the currently accepted date. Soon after his birth the family moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where Bill spent his youth. He began playing music at an early age. At the age of 10 he made himself a fiddle from a cigar box and learned how to play spirituals and folk songs from his uncle, Jerry Belcher. He and a friend named Louis Carter, who played a homemade guitar, began performing at social and church functions. These early p… More:

Excerpt: Cynthia Ann Stephanie “Cyndi” Lauper (born June 22, 1953) is an American Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and Emmy Award winning actress. She achieved success in the mid-1980s with the release of the album She’s So Unusual and became the first female singer to have four top-five singles released from one album. Lauper has released 11 albums and over 40 singles, and as of 2008 had sold more than 25 million records worldwide. Lauper was born to Fred and Catrine Lauper in Ozone Park in the borough of Queens within the city of New York, New York and was raised there. Her mother uses the stage name, “Catrine Dominique” for the music videos in which she has appeared. Her father was of German and Swiss descent and her mother is Italian American (from Sicily). She has an older sister, Ellen, and a younger brother, Fred (nicknamed Butch). Lauper’s mother remarried, divorced again, and went to work as a waitress. It was during this time that Lauper began listening to artists like Judy Garland, Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, and the Beatles. Her mother encouraged her independence and creativity. At the age of twelve, Lauper learned how to play an acoustic guitar, which her sister had given her, and she started to write her own lyrics. She had a great love of art and music and tried to find ways to express herself. Even at this early age, Lauper started dyeing her hair different colors and wearing radical fashions. Lauper was accepted in a special public high school for students with talent in the visual arts, but she was held back and eventually dropped out, earning her GED sometime later. At the age of seventeen, she left home, planning to study art. Her journey would take her to Canada, where she spent two weeks in the woods with her dog, Spar… More:

Excerpt: Kingfish in Concert: King Biscuit Flower Hour is a live album by the rock group Kingfish. It was recorded at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on April 3, 1976, and released in 1996. Part of the recording that became the album was originally broadcast on the radio show The King Biscuit Flower Hour. At the time of the Beacon Theatre concert, Kingfish had its “classic” mid-70s lineup Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead on guitar and vocals, Matthew Kelly on guitar, harmonica, and vocals, Dave Torbert, formerly of the New Riders of the Purple Sage, on bass and vocals, Robbie Hoddinott on lead guitar, and Chris Herold on drums. Kingfish in Concert contains the song medley “Lazy Lightning” / “Supplication”, written by Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow. These songs became part of the Grateful Dead’s repertoire two months later when, after a break of a year and a half, they resumed playing live concerts. The album also features “One More Saturday Night”, as well as several cover songs that are associated with the Dead “C.C. Rider”, “New Minglewood Blues”, “Around and Around”, and “Promised Land”. In an interview quoted in the CD liner notes, Matthew Kelly said, “The one thing I remember about the Beacon Theatre was how great the audience was and how incredible the acoustics were. It was a great place to play. Big enough to make it exciting, but not so big, like the stadiums we played that had no soul…. There was some kind of chemistry with the first Kingfish that was magical. We were a live band, more so than a studio band. We worked off the audience. On a good night, when we played live, we were able to create some kind of special magic.” … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11923295

Excerpt: Joseph Shabalala (, 1941 – ), born Bhekizizwe Joseph Siphatimandla Mxoveni Mshengu Bigboy Shabalala, is the founder and musical director of the South African choral group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Joseph was born in the town of Ladysmith (eMnambithi district) in the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa. His parents, Jonathan Mluwane Shabalala and Nomandla Elina Shabalala, raised Joseph and his six siblings on a white-owned farm called Tugela. His father died in the late 1940s; Joseph, being the eldest, had to take care of the family. He left the farm, however, in 1958 to search for work in the nearby town of Durban. During this time, he was spotted by a well-known group, the Durban Choir, after he delighted audiences with his smooth guitar playing and soprano voice. When he joined the Choir, he attempted to teach them some of his new compositions, namely his first song Nomathemba (which was made into a play in 1995). They refused, and so he left them after only two years. In 1960, Joseph discovered an isicathamiya group, The Highlanders, led by his hero Galiyane Hlatshwayo. Hlatshwayo was the man who encouraged Joseph to use his voice powerfully. Joseph formed his own group the same year, Ezimnyama (“The Black Ones”). A series of dreams Joseph had in his sleep in December 1964 was a major turning point in the formation of the group; when he saw how well his group did in the once-weekly isicathamiya competitions, he renamed them Ladysmith Black Mambazo, “Mambazo” meaning axe, referring to how the group chopped down the other choirs… More:

Excerpt: Myslovitz is a Polish rock band, whose music incorporates elements of college rock, shoegazing, and, arguably, Britpop. From 2003, EMI Group has been attempting to establish them internationally, with considerable support from MTV Europe. The band take their name from their industrial hometown of Mysowice in Upper Silesia (Southern Poland). Guitarist and vocalist Artur Rojek started the band in 1992 as “The Freshmen”, taking the initial name from the 1990 film The Freshman, starring Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderickwhich indicates a fascination with cinema that would become a characteristic feature throughout the band’s career. In 1994 they changed their name to Myslovitz after their hometown of Mysowice. The band’s early phase was characterised by a somewhat debonair punk attitude, as Rojek admits: “I started Myslovitz in 1992. I was twenty then and I had no idea how to make good music. Surely, I was a big fan of a few British groups (Ride, Stone Roses, My Bloody Valentine, Housemartins) but I couldn’t play the guitar at all. After several months of rehearsals I decided that I should cover the holes in my musical education by chaos (the bigger the better).” Even so, they soon caught the media’s attention, winning several important competitions for young musicians; this enabled them to make their first professional recordings in the studio of Radio Lodz. In 1994, Myslovitz were signed by MJM Music Pl and recorded their self-titled debut album with British producer Ian Harris, who had previously worked for, amongst others, Joy Division, New Order, and The Exploited. Upon its release in 1995, the album received euphoric reviews and was declared “Debut of the Year” by several music magazines. Some critics compared it to Oasis, who were at the… More:

He began playing guitar after buying one from a schoolmate during childhood, and saved the money that he earned bagging groceries to buy guitar lesson books. Jewell also listened to the music that his father, also named Buddy, played for him, and was taught by his uncle Clyde how to play “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. By age fifteen, Jewell had also taught himself how to play Johnny Cash’s “I Still Miss Someone.” Jewell also majored in television and radio in college, although he left in his junior year to marry, despite the marriage only lasting two-and-a-half years. Jewell later moved to Camden, Arkansas at age 21 in pursuit of a musical career. There, he discovered a band called White Oak, which was seeking a new lead singer. This band was sponsored by a booking agency whose roster also included Canyon and a band founded by a then-unknown Trace Adkins. After touring with White Oak for four years, he moved to Dallas, Texas, where he took a role in a gunfighing show at Six Flags over Texas. He later entered a singing competition that was sponsored by the band Alabama, whose music was also an inspiration to him. He won the competition’s top prize, which was an opening slot for the band. Excerpt: Edyta Bartosiewicz (born January 11, 1966 in Warsaw) is a Polish rock singer, composer and songwriter. Her career has been awarded by five Fryderyks. In Poland, she’s known for her highly reflective and unusual lyrics. When Edyta Bartosiewicz was ten years old she already learned how to play the guitar, which she received from her father for good grades. She composed simple lyrics, usually, with English texts, which were full of errors as she honestly admitted. Edyta Bartosiewicz once thought that music was restricted only for chosen people and she was convinced that she was not one of them. Soon she studied at Nicolaus Copernicus High School in Warsaw (XXXIII L.O. im. Mikoaja Kopernika). At that time, Bartosiewicz did not consider that her future career will be related to music and, what is interesting, she devoted herself to sport (firstly, she practiced speed skating and, then, volleyball for ten years). After graduating from high school, she began studying at SGPiS in Warsaw (now SGH, Warsaw School of Economics.) By then, she already tried to make her dream about music career come true. This is why she started her first amateur band in Misk Mazowiecki. She tried to reconcile her affection to music with school duties. Unluckily, the band did not live up to her expectations. After ignoring suggestions from Walter Chestowski that she should start professional recordings, she decided to leave for London in 1986. There, Bartosiewicz met The Blue Aeroplanes and during their concerts she participated in, she realized that music is an indispensable part of her life. She immediately met people, who agreed to gather funds for her first professional album recording. This is why, after six months she came back to Warsaw. It was a breakthrough in her… More:

Musical career George started playing music when he was 14. He was inspired at a young age to play music, specifically bass guitar, when he discovered The Beatles , and more specifically Paul McCartney . He was taught how to play bass guitar at that age, and decided, once he was comfortable enough, to try to start a band. He played bass in several bands until the age of 21, when he decided to teach himself how to play drums. He spent the first several years (1980-1984) playing in cover bands, playing backyard parties, school talent shows, and events of this nature. 1980s In the early-mid 1980s, the Miami punk scene barely existed, for all but a handful of bands.
