Excerpt: Running in the Family was Level 42’s 1987 album and featured the UK hit singles: “Lessons in Love” (which reached No. 3 in April 1986), “Running in the Family” (No. 6 in February 1987), “To Be With You Again” (No. 10 in April ‘87), “It’s Over” (No. 10, in September 1987) and “Children Say” (No. 22 at the end of 1987). All five singles peaked in the top 10 in the Netherlands, where the band were always popular. “Lessons in Love” peaked at #1 in Germany, South Africa, Switzerland and Denmark. This was the last Level 42 album of 1980’s to feature brothers Phil (drums) and Roland ‘Boon’ Gould (guitar), who had cited dissatisfaction with the musical direction of the band, and exhaustion as departure reasons. Later in ‘87 The Platinum Edition of the album was issued. The CD and cassette replaced Lessons In love, Running In The Family and It’s Over with remixed versions, and added remixes of Something About You and World Machine from the previous album. On vinyl the remixes were featured on one 33rpm record which was shrink-wrapped to the standard edition of the Running In The Family album. Also in 1987 the group released the video collection “Family of Five” with the music videos of the five singles from Running in the Family. The release was only in the United Kingdom. Excerpt: Chris Brooks is an Australian rock, metal and fusion guitarist most noted for his debut instrumental album “The Master Plan” and his subsequent work with members of Yngwie Malmsteen, Black Sabbath, Lana Lane, and fellow Australians LORD. Growing up as one of two sons of a career musician (drummer Ken Brooks), it was not really til he was 11 or 12 that Brooks realised that being a musician could be a career. He knew his father played the drums and that he was “bloody good at it” and that he did it a lot, but it was not until his own life-altering experiences with music that Brooks realised he could make a living and a life-long pursuit out of music. A few months before he was born, his father Ken scored a one-off gig playing drums for singer and Aussie megastar John Farnham. His mother said a foetal Chris kicked a lot during the show. Brooks took organ lessons at age 5, but at age 10 he came home to find a 3/4 size Stella classical guitar on his bed in a gig bag, accompanied by a Mel Bay book. While Brooks reports to have taken lessons initially, his boredom soon kicked in and lessons stopped after six months. In 1986 John Farnham made a comeback, and Farnham’s new band featured Brett Garsed on guitar. A concert for the “Whispering Jack” album was broadcast on Australian prime-time TV and featured a tune called “Let Me Out”, the extended Garsed guitar solo of which Brooks credits as a major turning point in his inspiration to resume playing the guitar. Brooks cites other early influences as Kee Marcello of the band Europe, Vinnie Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen. Brooks attended the Australian Institute of Music for a certfficate course in contemporary music. During his short time there Brooks was exposed to jazz fusion and began listening to guit… More:

Chapters: Ritchie Blackmore, Candice Night, Tina Chancey, Malcolm Dick. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 31. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Richard Hugh “Ritchie” Blackmore (born 14 April 1945 in Weston-super-Mare) is an English guitarist, who was a founding member of hard rock bands Deep Purple and Rainbow. Blackmore left Deep Purple first in 1975 and for a second time in 1993 due to a growing rift between Blackmore and other members in spite of renewed commercial success. His current band is the Renaissance-influenced Blackmore’s Night. Blackmore was born at Allandale Nursing Home, Weston-super-Mare, England, but moved to Heston, Middlesex at the age of two. He was 11 when he got his first guitar. His father bought it for him on certain conditions: “He said if I was going to play this thing, he was either going to have someone teach it to me properly, or he was going to smash me across the head with it. So I actually took the lessons for a year classical lessons – and it got me on to the right footing, using all the fingers and the right strokes of the plectrum and the nonsense that goes with it.” Whilst at school he did well at sports including the Javelin. Blackmore left school at age 15 and started work as an apprentice radio mechanic at nearby Heathrow Airport. He was given guitar lessons by Big Jim Sullivan. He was influenced in his youth by early rockers like Hank Marvin. His playing improved and in the early 1960s he started out as a session player for Joe Meek’s music productions and performed in several bands. He was a member of the instrumental combo, The Outlaws, and backed Heinz (playing on his top ten hit “Just Like Eddie”), Screaming Lord Sutch, Glenda Collins and Boz among others. While working for Joe Meek, he got to know engineer Derek Lawrence, who would late…More:

Excerpt: John Popper (born March 29, 1967) is an American musician and songwriter. He is most famous for his role as frontman of rock band Blues Traveler performing harmonica, guitar and vocals. He is widely considered a harmonica virtuoso, and is listed by harmonica manufacturer Hohner as a “Featured Artist”, an accolade reserved for only the best and most successful harmonica players. John Popper was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was a Hungarian immigrant who escaped Budapest in the 1950s. Through him, Popper is related to David Popper, a nineteenth-century European cellist. Popper was raised in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. He attended Davenport Ridge School, Stamford Catholic High School (now Trinity Catholic High School) and Princeton High School (New Jersey). He took lessons on the piano, the cello, and the guitar, but none of those instruments appealed to him and he hated being forced to practice. He originally wanted to become a comedian, finding he could use humor to make friends and avoid bullies, but when he and a friend performed a routine as The Blues Brothers, he found that he enjoyed musical performance. From there, he took up the harmonica. Popper played trumpet in the Princeton High School Studio Jazz Band, and convinced the teacher to let him play harmonica instead, after an in-class solo on the song “She Blinded Me With Science”. He formed several garage bands with friends in Princeton, New Jersey, one of which evolved into Blues Traveler in 1987. After graduating from high school, the group’s members all moved to New York City, where Popper enrolled in The New School for Social Research. Popper att…More:

He began taking lessons and by age 13, joined his first band, the “Tornadoes”. At age 15, he joined another band with future Boston drummer Sib Hashian. They would often play at night clubs, sometimes seven times a week. Later, he met up with Brad Delp and Fran Sheehan, both future members of Boston. He auditioned for Delp’s band, but didn’t make the cut as he explains here: It was around this time that I met Fran Sheehan and Brad Delp. Fran’s house was the place musicians went to and jam. We had some great times there, refining our chops until the wee hours. I’m sure the neighbors didn’t appreciate it as much as we did. I met Brad when I auditioned for his band. The guitar player had decided to leave and brought me there as his replacement. Brad sang Led Zeppelin’s Communication Breakdown. I had never heard anybody sing like that before, I will never forget it. Unfortunately, I did not get the gig. When he went to college at Boston University, he sought to get a degree in Geology. He tried to put music aside to focus on school, but he soon met up with Tom Scholz who was right across the river at MIT. The group evolved from Goudreau’s college band “Mother’s Milk” which also included Tom Scholz and Brad Delp. Goudreau worked with Scholz and Delp as early as 1969 on an initial set of demo tapes, where he performed all of the rhythm and lead guitar work. These early attempts to attract record label interest did not succeed. Eventually we put together a demo tape, and brought it to New Yor… More:

Excerpt: Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5, 1887 November 17, 1959) was a Brazilian composer, described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music”. Villa-Lobos has become the best-known and most significant Latin American composer to date. He wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras (“Brazilian Bach-pieces”). Heitor Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro. His father, Raul, was a wealthy, educated man of Spanish extraction, a librarian, an amateur astronomer and musician. In Villa-Lobos’s early childhood, Brazil underwent a period of social revolution and modernisation, finally abolishing slavery in 1888 and overthrowing the Empire of Brazil in 1889. The changes in Brazil were reflected in its musical life: previously European music had been the dominant influence, and the courses at the Conservatório de Música were grounded in traditional counterpoint and harmony. Villa-Lobos underwent very little of this formal training. After a few abortive harmony lessons, he learnt music by illicit observation from the top of the stairs of the regular musical evenings at his house arranged by his father. He learned to play the cello, the guitar and the clarinet. When his father died suddenly in 1899 he earned a living for his family by playing in cinema and theatre orchestras in Rio. Around 1905 Villa-Lobos started explorations of Brazil’s “dark interior”, absorbing the native Brazilian musical culture. Serious doubt has been cast on some of Villa-Lobos’s tales of the decade or so he spent on these expeditions, and about his capture and near es… More:

Excerpt: Isaac Albéniz y Pascual (Spanish pronunciation: ) (29 May 1860, Camprodon 18 May 1909, Cambo-les-Bains ) was a Spanish pianist and composer best known for his piano works based on folk music idioms (many of which have been transcribed by others for guitar). Albéniz with his daughter, LauraBorn in Camprodon, province of Girona, to Ángel Albéniz (a customs official) and his wife Dolors Pascual, Albéniz was a child prodigy who first performed at the age of four. At age seven, after apparently taking lessons from Antoine Marmontel, he passed the entrance examination for piano at the Paris Conservatoire, but he was refused admission because he was believed to be too young. His concert career began at the young age of nine when his father toured both Isaac and his sister, Clementina, throughout northern Spain. By the time he had reached 12, he had made many attempts to run away from home. At the age of 12 he stowed away in a ship bound for Buenos Aires. He then made his way via Cuba to the United States, giving concerts in New York and San Francisco and then travelled to Liverpool, London and Leipzig. By age 15, he had already given concerts worldwide. After a short stay at the Leipzig Conservatory, in 1876 he went to study in Brussels. In 1880, he went to Budapest to study with Franz Liszt, only to find out that Liszt was in Weimar, Germany. In 1883, he met the teacher and composer Felip Pedrell, who inspired him to write Spanish music such as the Chants d’Espagne. The first movement (Prelude) of that suite, later retitled after the composer’s death as Asturias (Leyenda), is probably most famous today as part of the classical guitar repertoire, even though it was originally composed for piano and only later transcribed.
