One method of learning is from a guitar book. This can help give you a great overview. Many contain pictures, text, and tablature to help you get your start. Some of these books are definitely better than others, so you will want to read online reviews to find the one that is right for you.

On the con side of reading a guitar book to learn guitar is that they are not very comprehensive. They offer only a flat way of learning to play, and it’s hard to know if you’re getting the techniques down.
