A Brief History of Love $19.98 On their debut album, A Brief History of Love, the Big Pink immerse themselves in all aspects of the first wave of shoegaze. The duo of Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell have doubtlessly made a complete study of the guitar music coming out of their native U.K. in the late ’80s and early ’90s and worked to build their sound into an impressive conglomeration of influences that’s made up of components like the proggy excess of the Catherine Wheel, the guitar overload of My Bloody Valentine, the drum loops and dance elements of Chapterhouse, the dark, industrial sheen of Curve, and the epic sweep of the Verve but with plenty of modern production tricks. The influence extends to the vocals, which recall the expansiveness of the Verve’s Richard Ashcroft rather than the dreaminess of the Thames Valley shoegaze contingent. Seeing (and hearing) all these comparisons may make it easy for some to instantly write the band off as record collectors or scene fetishists with no ideas of their own, but that would be a mistake. Yes, they are derivative. Yes, they are rehashing the past. This is key, though. They write really good songs and make them sound really good, too. That’s the neat trick that allows them to escape the retro-revivalist label and that’s why A Brief History of Love should appeal to both fans of shoegaze days gone by and the people who are still discovering the past and digging other groups who, like the Big Pink, are keeping shoegaze alive. The best songs on the album would do all right if stacked up against the work of their idols. Take “Dominos,” for example. The thundering drums combine with an instantly memorable hook, the kind that makes you want to sing along before the first chorus is half over, to make it soar. “At War with the Sun,” too, has a thrilling chorus and an uplifting feel, “Tonight” rollicks and rolls like a goofy cross between Jane’s Addiction at their most pop and Medicine at their frothiest, and “Love in Vain” is a heartbreaking balla… |

A Vision of Misery [Bonus Tracks] $16.95 After two fine albums straddling the stylistic transition between thrash and death metal, Sadus pretty much committed to the latter with their third, 1992’s A Vision of Misery. Really, they had no choice, given thrash metal’s increasing obsolescence and death’s simultaneous rise. Still, this move nevertheless resulted in one of two conclusions: at best Sadus sacrificed the key thrashing component that had helped make them special and somewhat unique; at worst it exposed them as carryovers from the bygone generation. Under either assumption, A Vision of Misery was hardly some kind of failure, with new compositions such as “Through the Eyes of Greed,” “Machines,” and “Echoes of Forever” epitomizing technical death metal, while not exactly measuring up to genre standard-bearers like Death and Morbid Angel. And, although they certainly lose some of their sharp claws due to the overall denser guitar sound chosen here, it’s actually the band’s increasing reliance on mid-paced tempos and repetitive riffs that winds up dragging down other selections like “Slave to Misery” and the way overlong but otherwise solid “Facelift.” Even so, for fans of Sadus’ habitually inventive arrangements and sharp dynamic shifts, there’s plenty on offer here. And note to the Steve DiGiorgio fan club: his mind-boggling bass licks and impossible tricks are still regularly splattered all over these tracks, even if often crushed deeper in the mix. Unfortunately, DiGiorgio soon accepted an offer to go off on tour with the far more lucrative Death, leaving Sadus in limbo for the next half-decade. B? te Noire $39.98 Hooking up with regular Madonna collaborator Patrick Leonard as the co-producer of this album proved to be just the trick for Ferry. Bete Noire sparkles as the highlight of Ferry’s post-Roxy solo career, adding enough energy to make it more than Boys and Girls part two. Here, his trademark well-polished heartache strikes a fine balance between mysterious moodiness and dancefloor energy, and Leonard adds more than a few tricks that keep the pep up. Five out of the nine songs are Ferry/Leonard collaborations; all succeed, from “Limbo”’s opening punch and flow to the cinematic (and unsurprisingly French-tinged) feeling of the title track. The atmospheric, almost chilling “Zamba”’s minimal, buried drums, soft synths and doomy piano, make it the best of that bunch. Ferry’s best moment here is all his own, though — the great single “Kiss and Tell,” with a steady, bold bassline leading the way for his slightly dissolute portrayal of mating rituals and all they entail. Like Boys and Girls, the album’s supporting cast mixes a lengthy list of session pros with a few guest stars. David Gilmour returns, but even more interesting is the appearance of another guitar hero — none other than Johnny Marr, hot on the heels of the Smiths’ dissolution. He took the music of a Smiths instrumental, “Money Changes Everything,” and made it the basis of a full collaboration, “The Right Stuff.” Marr shows a little more fluidity than usual, likely thanks to the rhythm section’s smooth, effortless groove, while Ferry steps to the fore with gusto. Book of Heavy Metal [Bonus DVD] $16.98 Dream Evil’s third album, Book of Heavy Metal, is a brazen tribute to this always controversial genre — as likely to invoke blind devotion from its fans as it does outright dismissal from its antagonists. In fact, Dream Evil, much like loin-clothed metal warriors Manowar, care not for the latter category of sniveling vermin! No sir, their mission to metalify (is that a word?) the realm is fueled by far grander ambitions and deeper commitments than those non-believers could possibly fathom. Or so one would gather from the meaty staccato riffs, dazzling guitar solos and soaring vocals (everything classic metal is known and loved for) to be found in ? ber-metallic offerings such as “Into the Moonlight,” “Crusader’s Anthem,” and the over-the-top title track, which incidentally begins with vocalist Niklas Isfeldt’s piercing scream of: “metaaallll!” Noted metal producer Fredrik Nordstr? m is the main architect of Dream Evil’s castle — a castle also embattled by bassist Peter Stalfors and legendary drummer Snowy Shaw (King Diamond, Notre Dame, etc.), but it’s Greek guitar-shredding sub-legend Gus G. (Mystic Prophecy, Firewind, etc.) who consistently shines through with his ever-explosive, but surprisingly restrained and well-timed leads here (and on album highlight “No Way” he pulls a few Zakk Wylde tricks, surprisingly enough). Also to their credit, Dream Evil doesn’t pave their glorious road with the easy but by now rote clich? s of power metal. There’s virtually zero thrash-like speed to be found here, and many songs (“The Sledge,” “Let’s Make Rock” and “The Mirror,” in particular) actually come closest to old-school hard rock than later-day metal for inspiration. Throw in the mandatory power ballad (the decidedly syrupy “Unbreakable Chain”) and an absolute metal classic in the Accept mold named “M.O.M. Flex-Able $12.99 Steve Vai recorded his debut album, Flex-able, at home on an eight-track studio and released it himself in 1984. Even though Vai is one of rock’s most renowned guitar virtuosos, Flex-able isn’t really a typical “shred” album; playing with Frank Zappa for several years rubbed off on Vai, and many of his compositions reflect both Zappa’s musical influence and a skewed sense of humor that makes for some whimsically entertaining moments (i.e., “Little Green Men”).
