Excerpt: Chris Brooks is an Australian rock, metal and fusion guitarist most noted for his debut instrumental album “The Master Plan” and his subsequent work with members of Yngwie Malmsteen, Black Sabbath, Lana Lane, and fellow Australians LORD. Growing up as one of two sons of a career musician (drummer Ken Brooks), it was not really til he was 11 or 12 that Brooks realised that being a musician could be a career. He knew his father played the drums and that he was “bloody good at it” and that he did it a lot, but it was not until his own life-altering experiences with music that Brooks realised he could make a living and a life-long pursuit out of music. A few months before he was born, his father Ken scored a one-off gig playing drums for singer and Aussie megastar John Farnham. His mother said a foetal Chris kicked a lot during the show. Brooks took organ lessons at age 5, but at age 10 he came home to find a 3/4 size Stella classical guitar on his bed in a gig bag, accompanied by a Mel Bay book. While Brooks reports to have taken lessons initially, his boredom soon kicked in and lessons stopped after six months. In 1986 John Farnham made a comeback, and Farnham’s new band featured Brett Garsed on guitar. A concert for the “Whispering Jack” album was broadcast on Australian prime-time TV and featured a tune called “Let Me Out”, the extended Garsed guitar solo of which Brooks credits as a major turning point in his inspiration to resume playing the guitar. Brooks cites other early influences as Kee Marcello of the band Europe, Vinnie Moore and Yngwie Malmsteen. Brooks attended the Australian Institute of Music for a certfficate course in contemporary music. During his short time there Brooks was exposed to jazz fusion and began listening to guit… More:

Excerpt: Richard Hugh “Ritchie” Blackmore (born 14 April 1945 in Weston-super-Mare) is an English guitarist, who was a founding member of hard rock bands Deep Purple and Rainbow. Blackmore left Deep Purple first in 1975 and for a second time in 1993 due to a growing rift between Blackmore and other members in spite of renewed commercial success. His current band is the Renaissance-influenced Blackmore’s Night. Blackmore was born at Allandale Nursing Home, Weston-super-Mare, England, but moved to Heston, Middlesex at the age of two. He was 11 when he got his first guitar. His father bought it for him on certain conditions: “He said if I was going to play this thing, he was either going to have someone teach it to me properly, or he was going to smash me across the head with it. So I actually took the lessons for a year classical lessons – and it got me on to the right footing, using all the fingers and the right strokes of the plectrum and the nonsense that goes with it.” Whilst at school he did well at sports including the Javelin. Blackmore left school at age 15 and started work as an apprentice radio mechanic at nearby Heathrow Airport. He was given guitar lessons by Big Jim Sullivan. He was influenced in his youth by early rockers like Hank Marvin. His playing improved and in the early 1960s he started out as a session player for Joe Meek’s music productions and performed in several bands. He was a member of the instrumental combo, The Outlaws, and backed Heinz (playing on his top ten hit “Just Like Eddie”), Screaming Lord Sutch, Glenda Collins and Boz among others. While working for Joe Meek, he got to know engineer Derek Lawrence, who would late…More:

Excerpt: John Popper (born March 29, 1967) is an American musician and songwriter. He is most famous for his role as frontman of rock band Blues Traveler performing harmonica, guitar and vocals. He is widely considered a harmonica virtuoso, and is listed by harmonica manufacturer Hohner as a “Featured Artist”, an accolade reserved for only the best and most successful harmonica players. John Popper was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His father was a Hungarian immigrant who escaped Budapest in the 1950s. Through him, Popper is related to David Popper, a nineteenth-century European cellist. Popper was raised in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. He attended Davenport Ridge School, Stamford Catholic High School (now Trinity Catholic High School) and Princeton High School (New Jersey). He took lessons on the piano, the cello, and the guitar, but none of those instruments appealed to him and he hated being forced to practice. He originally wanted to become a comedian, finding he could use humor to make friends and avoid bullies, but when he and a friend performed a routine as The Blues Brothers, he found that he enjoyed musical performance. From there, he took up the harmonica. Popper played trumpet in the Princeton High School Studio Jazz Band, and convinced the teacher to let him play harmonica instead, after an in-class solo on the song “She Blinded Me With Science”. He formed several garage bands with friends in Princeton, New Jersey, one of which evolved into Blues Traveler in 1987. After graduating from high school, the group’s members all moved to New York City, where Popper enrolled in The New School for Social Research. Popper att…More:

Excerpt: Barry Goudreau (November 29, 1951) is a musician, best known as one of the original guitarists for the rock band Boston. Goudreau had developed a musical interest at an early age and got his first guitar, an acoustic which he borrowed from a friend, at age 11. He began taking lessons and by age 13, joined his first band, the “Tornadoes”. At age 15, he joined another band with future Boston drummer Sib Hashian. They would often play at night clubs, sometimes seven times a week. Later, he met up with Brad Delp and Fran Sheehan, both future members of Boston. He auditioned for Delp’s band, but didn’t make the cut as he explains here: It was around this time that I met Fran Sheehan and Brad Delp. Fran’s house was the place musicians went to and jam. We had some great times there, refining our chops until the wee hours. I’m sure the neighbors didn’t appreciate it as much as we did. I met Brad when I auditioned for his band. The guitar player had decided to leave and brought me there as his replacement. Brad sang Led Zeppelin’s Communication Breakdown. I had never heard anybody sing like that before, I will never forget it. Unfortunately, I did not get the gig. When he went to college at Boston University, he sought to get a degree in Geology. He tried to put music aside to focus on school, but he soon met up with Tom Scholz who was right across the river at MIT. The group evolved from Goudreau’s college band “Mother’s Milk” which also included Tom Scholz and Brad Delp. Goudreau worked with Scholz and Delp as early as 1969 on an initial set of demo tapes, where he performed all of the rhythm and lead guitar work. These early attempts to attract record label interest did not succeed. Eventually we put together a demo tape, and brought it to New Yor… More:

Excerpt: Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5, 1887 November 17, 1959) was a Brazilian composer, described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music”. Villa-Lobos has become the best-known and most significant Latin American composer to date. He wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works. His music was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition, as exemplified by his Bachianas Brasileiras (“Brazilian Bach-pieces”). Heitor Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro. His father, Raul, was a wealthy, educated man of Spanish extraction, a librarian, an amateur astronomer and musician. In Villa-Lobos’s early childhood, Brazil underwent a period of social revolution and modernisation, finally abolishing slavery in 1888 and overthrowing the Empire of Brazil in 1889. The changes in Brazil were reflected in its musical life: previously European music had been the dominant influence, and the courses at the Conservatório de Música were grounded in traditional counterpoint and harmony. Villa-Lobos underwent very little of this formal training. After a few abortive harmony lessons, he learnt music by illicit observation from the top of the stairs of the regular musical evenings at his house arranged by his father. He learned to play the cello, the guitar and the clarinet. When his father died suddenly in 1899 he earned a living for his family by playing in cinema and theatre orchestras in Rio. Around 1905 Villa-Lobos started explorations of Brazil’s “dark interior”, absorbing the native Brazilian musical culture. Serious doubt has been cast on some of Villa-Lobos’s tales of the decade or so he spent on these expeditions, and about his capture and near es… More:

Excerpt: Baden Powell Baden Powell de Aquino (August 6, 1937 – September 26, 2000) usually known simply as Baden Powell , was a musician, widely regarded as the greatest Brazilian guitarist of all time. He explored the instrument to its utmost limits, playing it in a distinctive, unique manner, incorporating virtuoso classical techniques together with popular harmony and swing . He performed in many styles, including Bossa nova , Samba , Brazilian jazz , Latin jazz and Música Popular Brasileira . He often performed on stage during most of his lifetime, and recorded an extensive discography comprised by LP and CD albums produced in Brazil and Europe, particularly in France and Germany . Baden Powell also composed many fine pieces for guitar, such as Xangô, Simplesmente, Braziliense, Horizon, Abração em Madrid, Tristeza e solidão, Consolação, Samba, Casa Velha, Lotus, Imagem, and Canto de Ossanha. Biography Baden Powell de Aquino was born in Varre-Sai in the state of Rio de Janeiro , Brazil . His father, a scouting enthusiast, named him after Robert Baden-Powell . When he was three, his family relocated to a suburb in the city of Rio de Janeiro . The new surroundings proved profoundly influential. His house was a stop for popular musicians during his formative years. He started guitar lessons with Jayme Florence, a famous Choro guitarist in the 1940s. He soon proved a young virtuoso, having won many talent competitions before he was a teenager. At age fifteen, he was already playing professionally, accompanying singers and bands in various styles. As a youngster, he was fascinated

Excerpt: David Michael Gordon Graham, known as Davey Graham (originally Davy Graham), (26 November 194015 December 2008), was a British guitarist and one of the most influential figures in the 1960s British folk revival. He inspired many famous practitioners of the fingerstyle acoustic guitar such as Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Martin Carthy, John Martyn, Paul Simon and Jimmy Page, who based his solo “White Summer” on Graham’s “She moved thru’ the Bizarre/Blue Raga” and “Mustapha”. Graham is probably best-known for his acoustic instrumental, “Anji” and for his pioneering use of DADGAD tuning, later widely adopted by acoustic guitarists. It was not in Graham’s nature to pursue fame and fortune and he retired to relative obscurity for many years, when he engaged in charity work and teaching as well as protracted periods of drug use, before beginning to tour again in the years before his death. His childlike, almost obsessive, enthusiasm for music never left him, however, and he would gladly give a free private concert to any chance acquaintance. Graham was born in Hinckley, Leicestershire, England, to a Guyanese mother and a Scottish father. Although he never had any music theory lessons he learnt to play the piano and harmonica as a child and then took up the classical guitar at the age of 12. As a teenager he was strongly influenced by the folk guitar player Steve Benbow, who had travelled widely with the army and played a guitar style influenced by Moroccan music. At the age of 19 Graham wrote what is probably his most famous composition, the acoustic guitar solo “Angie” (sometimes spelled “Anji”: see below). His biographer Colin Harper credits Graham with single-handledly inventing the concept of the folk guitar instrumental (while acknowledging th… More:

Excerpt: Isaac Albéniz y Pascual (Spanish pronunciation: ) (29 May 1860, Camprodon 18 May 1909, Cambo-les-Bains ) was a Spanish pianist and composer best known for his piano works based on folk music idioms (many of which have been transcribed by others for guitar). Albéniz with his daughter, LauraBorn in Camprodon, province of Girona, to Ángel Albéniz (a customs official) and his wife Dolors Pascual, Albéniz was a child prodigy who first performed at the age of four. At age seven, after apparently taking lessons from Antoine Marmontel, he passed the entrance examination for piano at the Paris Conservatoire, but he was refused admission because he was believed to be too young. His concert career began at the young age of nine when his father toured both Isaac and his sister, Clementina, throughout northern Spain. By the time he had reached 12, he had made many attempts to run away from home. At the age of 12 he stowed away in a ship bound for Buenos Aires. He then made his way via Cuba to the United States, giving concerts in New York and San Francisco and then travelled to Liverpool, London and Leipzig. By age 15, he had already given concerts worldwide. After a short stay at the Leipzig Conservatory, in 1876 he went to study in Brussels. In 1880, he went to Budapest to study with Franz Liszt, only to find out that Liszt was in Weimar, Germany. In 1883, he met the teacher and composer Felip Pedrell, who inspired him to write Spanish music such as the Chants d’Espagne. The first movement (Prelude) of that suite, later retitled after the composer’s death as Asturias (Leyenda), is probably most famous today as part of the classical guitar repertoire, even though it was originally composed for piano and only later transcribed. Excerpt: Iva Bittová (born July 22, 1958) is a Moravian avant-garde violinist, singer and composer of Romani origin. She began her career as an actress in the mid 1970s, appearing in several Czech feature films, but switched to playing violin and singing in the early 1980s. She started recording in 1986 and by 1990 her unique vocal and instrumental technique gained her international recognition. Since then, she has performed regularly all over Europe, the United States and Japan, and has made over eight solo albums. The second of three daughters, she grew up in a musical family where her father Koloman Bitto (Hungarian: ), a famous Romani musician from southern Slovakia, played guitar, trumpet and double bass in folk and classical ensembles, and her mother Ludmila Bittová (née Masaová) sang in professional vocal groups. As a child, Bittová took ballet and violin lessons in Opava and played child roles in the Silesian Theatre of Zdenk Nejedlý. When her family moved to Brno in 1971, she dropped music in favour of drama and studied at the Brno Conservatory. For the next ten years, Bittová worked as an actress, appearing in several Czech feature films and Brno television and radio productions. Eva Olmerová was born in Prague in 1934. She started piano lessons at the age of 6, as a pupil of Aurelie Káanová-Bubnová. After World War II her grandparents returned from London, where her grandfather had worked with Edvard Bene, president of the exiled Czechoslovak government. Her parents divorced in 1948, when she was fourteen. She remained with her father. At his cottage in Tebín u tchovic she had first-hand experience of the tramping movement and began to sing folk songs with guitar accompaniment. In the early 1950s she became involved in Prague’s jazz scene and performed with the Arnot Kavka Band. In 1951 she was arrested by the Czechoslovak state security service, in connection with her grandfather’s political activities and her uncle Otmar Kuera’s wartime service as Commander of 313 Squadron RAF. At the police station she was forced to undress, then interrogated. She was seventeen. Later, in 1958, she attacked and slapped a policeman and was jailed for fourteen months. In 1952 she married for the first time but was soon divorced. For a while she earned a living as a professional singer in the bars of Prague. In 1962 the composer Karel Mare offered her an engagement with the Semafor Theatre. Olmerová agreed, but this promising start was sabotaged when her “criminal past” was revealed in anonymous letters. Her performance of the Mare song Jsi jako dlouhý most (You’re Like A Bridge So Long) won her the Czechoslovak song competition Hledáme písniku pro vední den (In search of a song for the weekday). Founded by Folk musicians Frank Hamilton and Win Stracke, the School opened in Old Town in 1957 offering guitar and banjo lessons in a communal teaching style and hosting performances by well-known folk musicians. Currently the school is led by executive director Bau Graves and has an enrollment of about 6,000 students per week, 2,700 of them children. The Old Town School was originally founded by musicians Win Stracke and Frank Hamilton and opened December 1, 1957. Win was a classically trained singer and Frank was a young multi-instrumentalist and teacher of folk music; Frank had previously studied under Bess Lomax Hawes, daughter of folklorist John Lomax. Win and Frank met at the Gate of Horn nightclub in Chicago where they were both performing. Together Frank and Win developed a classroom technique based upon traditional oral and folk teaching methods: listening, watching, trial and error, and playing by ear. Where other music schools taught sight reading and performance, Win and Frank wanted the Old Town School “method” to retain its emphasis on participation and development of aural skills. Early Classes were held in dining room at the home of co-founder Dawn Greening Founder Frank Hamilton teaching a workshop. November 2007Several of the early faculty at the Old Town School were past members of Win Stracke’s the “I Come For to Sing” review. A

Excerpt: David Howell Evans (born 8 August 1961 in Barking, London, England), more widely known by his stage name The Edge (or just Edge), is an Irish musician. He is best known as the guitarist, keyboardist, and main backing vocalist of rock band U2. His distinctive electric guitar timbre and percussive style of playing, along with his use of digital sound processing delay and chorus in particular has been crucial in defining U2’s sound. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named him at #24 on its list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. David Howell Evans was born at the Barking Maternity Hospital, Essex, England to Welsh parents Garvin and Gwenda Evans. When he was just one, his family moved to County Dublin, Ireland where he attended St. Andrew’s National School. He received piano and guitar lessons and often performed with his brother Dik Evans before they both answered an advertisement posted by Larry Mullen, Jr. at their school, Mount Temple Comprehensive School, seeking musicians to form a band. The band accepted both of them. This band went through several incarnations before emerging as U2 in March 1978 (Dik Evans left the band just before the name change). U2 began performing in various venues in Ireland and eventually began developing a following. Their debut album, Boy, was released in 1980. In 1981, leading up to the October tour, Evans came very close to leaving U2 for religious reasons, but he was persuaded to stay. During this period, he became involved with a group called Shalom Tigers, in which bandmates Bono and Larry Mullen Jr. were also involved. Shortly after deciding to remain with the band, he wrote a piece of music that later became “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. The Edge married his secondary school girlfriend Aislinn O’Sulli… More:
